Whip it Wednesday..umm I mean WIP Wednesday

Whip it Wednesday came from (you aren't going to believe this) that song. You know it...that crazy song from the 80's. It was on the radio when I was starting my post and I just couldn't resist..hehehe!!!

I'm very excited that I'm not going to miss being in the Trim-a-Tree event here this year after all. I had told the curator at the gallery the end of last month that I wasn't going to have my pieces finished by the 8th (tomorrow folks...that's tomorrow) so I guess I would very sadly miss this year. She said under no certain terms was that going to happen. They have had people come in and ask about my Santa's for this year. Ask about MY Santa pieces by ME...asked about ME. OMGOSH...some folks actually remember me and me work...ummm I mean my work. OK deep breathe...calming down now. Ahhhhhemmmm!!!!  She said that I could bring them in whenever I got them finished. YEA!! I'm going to be busting me hiney to get things finished by next Thursday. That's my goal anyways, she said I had as much time as I needed but to just remember it ended on the 23rd of December.  They asked for MEEEEEEEE!!! OK..sorry, I'm a bit excited!!

These two are coming along nicely. (not as fast as I would like but I'm trying) Li'l Santa got his mittens felted and his boots on. I know that to some the mittens look to big but you have to see past the early stages of designing. Once he is complete...they will be the perfect size. Big guy is coming along too. I'm really proud of his hands (even though some thought they were "creepy" before. YOU know who I'm talking about..not mentioning any names. HAHA) I have to confess something though, his hands aren't really attached yet. I wanted some of YOU to see how they looked. ^_^   I always put them on last. It's much easier to get his clothes on without them on and worrying if I'm going to break a finger or two.

Big guys boots are real leather ones and OMGOSH....hard to sew but well worth the stuck fingers and chin. (Don't ask....just don't even ask) Making boots aren't difficult. I cut three separate pieces as you can see. The bottom piece I glue on and let dry before I start sewing it all together. Much easier not having the bottom slip sliding around ya know!!

Once the bottom has dried, I place the tongue piece on the top of the foot, sew a thread through the back to keep it secure and then take the thread to one side and start a blanket stitch all the way around to the other side.

Once the tongue's sewn on then I take the main boot part, fold a flap over (you can leave it plain or attach fur to it when all the sewing is finished...that I normally just glue on) and start sewing the top back part of the piece using the blanket stitch and once that is complete I blanket stitch it around the side where I started the tongue.

If you have any questions about making your own pair of doll boots just feel free to ask any questions. I LOVE to share and help!! Oh, by the way, I make the felt boots the same way. For variation in how my boots look, sometimes I put the flap in the front and leave it open so it looks like a boot you tie.You know..ones with shoelaces. Well..not real shoelaces..they're to big for my small ooaks...but ribbon or embroidery thread works nicely.

SO that's my WIP it Wednesday. What are you working on? I would love to hear about your work.

Until next time............Hugs,
Regi

Love a man in leather!!

WOW..this week is going by fast...matter of fact...time is going by extremely fast these days...EXCEPT that it seems to be taking FOREVER to finish this Santa piece. You're scratchin that noggin about now, ri iight? How can time fly but still go slow Regi? Well...if I knew the answer to that then I would be a genius and that I am soo not!! Haven't you ever worked on a design and it seem to take more time than it should. That's time in slow motion!!

I have been working on his costume and am really letting him ROCK with his velvet pants with beads going down the sides. Santa can be a styling kinda guy.....right down to his genuine leather boots. Gotta luv a man in leather...hehe!! I forgot how hard it is to hand sew leather...WOW. Talk about a work out but I enjoyed changing up from the felt boots I normally make him.

Don't ya just love his suspenders? He is going to be sitting down and with his jelly belly I knew you wouldn't be able to see it BUT he needed something to hold his breechers up. ^_^   Notice that Santa has realized that his head is missing? He is patting where it should be...poor fella.

The first head I made looked really funny on him and my muse wouldn't stop laughing SOOOO I sculpted one that looks just right. I know right now it doesn't look like the Santa we all know and love but just wait until his hair and beard are grown attached. See the little chair in the back? That's the one Santa will be sitting in going over his books of the girls and boys. Which book will YOU be in? The Naughty or Nice one?

Until next time...........Hugs

Treasure Galore!!!

It's MONDAY...can ya believe it? The weekend just kinda, sorta, swooshed on pass. Hope yours was a good one. I know that mine was...I found TREASURES on Saturday!!!

Our local National Guard has about two yard sales a year and we always find such interesting items. See the two pieces of fabric? They will make wonderful Santa capes...don't ya think? Actually the deep red will make several traditional Santa suites. I already have some white faux fur to trim them in. I know that the other piece is a bit BRIGHT but I love making capes that are different and unique for the jolly ole elf to wear.  I mean...ppplease...can you imagine having to wear red....every...single...year. ^_^

I'm thinking of making a few Santa heads and the candle holders will make perfect bases. Don't you think Santa would look so festive sitting on a mantel among several different heights of candles. The chest I plan on painting Santa's toy shop on and perhaps make a few vintage toys to place inside. The wooden doll stands I'm so happy I found....don't think I need to tell ya what I will use those for..hehe!!

I couldn't believe the luck in finding this vintage bracelet....well..actually the hubbikins found it. Aren't I GOOOD? I have trained taught him to look for props and things to use with my art. Of course, I'm going to take it apart and I'm thinking one link will make a beautiful belt buckle for Santa or even a broach that pins his cape at the neck. So many possibilities!!

This is the one thing that I am sooo happy that we found. Isn't it a beautiful sleigh? Can you see Santa sitting in it with his bag overflowing with toys for the good girls and boys? Oh yes...a great find for sure.

Sunday afternoon was a quite one. I made the little elf that goes with my latest Santa piece. Well, ok he is singing THAT song "I AINT'T GOT NOOOO BODY" but at least I sculpted his head, hands and feet and got them baked. Santa's head, hands and feet were baked too. I hope to get their armatures made so I can keep the singing down to a minimum.

So what was YOUR weekend like? Thank you for stopping by to visit....ya know I LOVE your visits!!!

Until next time................HUGS,
Regi

Having to keep cotton in my ears...LOL!!!

It seems that my muse is truly causing a ruckus in my studio. She has been leading Santa in a song that is beginning to sound like "99 bottles of caramel frappes on the wall". Of course, it's not THAT song but the old faithful that all my characters seem to enjoy bellowing out...very LOUDLY I might add!!! Oh ya know the song, "I AIN'T GOT NO BODY". They are driving me bonkers, for reals!!! I know you are sitting there laughing at me because you know if I have a muse that sings then I must be bonkers..hehe

I have been working on the wire armature today along with getting the base painted with my special snow mixture. It takes at least over night to dry so it's not tacky. We can't have tacky snow, now can we? ^_^

Once I got the armature made and wrapped I made the middle body section....ya know...Santa's bowl full of jelly!! You will see in the WIP photo how I make my soft body characters. Don't panic though when you see the skinny white arms and bird legs and big green belly, I still have to wrap it up in the yarn. I love using yarn as the underclothing. I finished the felt boots today along with the sweater sleeves too. I think I have gotten a good bit accomplished even with all the singing bellowing going on up in here!!!

I'm thinking of doing some bead work on the boots but haven't really decided for sure yet. Santa's cloak usually hides most the shoes so I'm not sure I want to add that much to something that won't really be seen. Ya know...kinda like the toe issue!!

Until next time..........HUGS,
Regi

It's a rather blustery day" said Pooh Bear!!

It is rather a blustery day here. It was overcast and rainy about an hour ago and now it's blue skies with a few clouds and winds that are making the trees whip and twirl. Some CRAZY weather, I must say!!!  We are feeling a bit better today about the weather but we will see how those feeling are tomorrow when the worse comes a knockin. We did put up the storm shutters yesterday when the hubbikins got home from work. If anything else, they will hopefully keep any tree branches or flying debre from breaking the windows.
I have to admit that it looks weird..kinda feel like I'm in a dark dungeon. HA..see the curtains open. I thought it would help.

I promised WIP photos on the Santa I am currently working on. Remember these are WIP (work in progress) photos which means Santa still needs to see the barber to trim up his beard and OH YEAH, he needs a body.

I have his hands completed with the exception of polishing his nails. His feet are complete and YES I know I didn't give him any toes. Ahhhwww....Mrs. Claus won't be able to play "little piggies"..hehe!! I am going to make boots for him so his toes would have been covered so no need for toes. His base (with my name stamped on it...love my little stamper) will be covered with some of my snow mixture. I won't cover my name though...what would have been the point of stamping it. HA!!

Still have a good bit of work to do and hopefully I can get some of it done this afternoon. Thank you for stopping by to visit. LOVE your visits and comments too.

Until next time...........HUGS,
Regi

Hummm...now that I have talked about it, perhaps I should have given him toes....OH WELL!!!! ^_^

Kitchen Faerie WIP

My muse has FINALLY started singing about something other than mermaids. Don't get me wrong,  ya'll know that I LOVE mermaids but I love other creatures too....like faeries. A friend has commissioned me to make her a kitchen faerie. I'm so excited, for two reasons, (#1) that I get to design a kitchen faerie and (#2) that I'm going to be pulling in two types of my art that I love to do....felt creations and clay creations.

Now this friend is a fabulous baker....OMGOSH...her cupcakes are to die for...or at least so good that they might make ya want to slap your momma. (I so wouldn't advise that...and I so don't condone that type of behavior. It's just one of our quirky Southern sayings that means it's "OHHH SO GOOD") The Chazman loves when she has orders to fill and makes a few extras because she brings some to us. Well...I really shouldn't say US as the Chazman seems to be the only one who gets to enjoy them. Not that we wouldn't love one but it seems when we decide to eat one...there...aren't.....any....left. Imagine that!!

With her love of baking and cupcakes being her specialty, well, it didn't take to much whispering from my muse to tell me what I needed to do with this ooaks. My plan is to make one of my felted cupcake pin cushions...but this time it won't be a pin cushion. It will be the base to a recipe card holder. The Li'l faerie will be the assistant pastry chef. She will have her little apron and chef hat along with a few baking instruments. Hopefully, she will be holding a tiny can of sprinkles and shaking it over the cupcake.

Here is what I have so far and keep in mind that I just started working on this.....it's still in the early WIP stage.

I have her wire armature completed and she is all wrapped up. I like using the florist tape to bulk out my pieces so as not to use to much clay to weigh them down. I mean...she has to be able to fly ya know!! ~_^

Here are some of her cooking utensils....a tiny wooden spoon....the sprinkles shaker.....a whisk and a spatula. I'm thinking of putting some vines on the handles but then I might not as they are going to be in her apron pocket. Decisions....decisions!!

Time to get back to work.....until next time...............HUGS,
Regi

Jada and Pearl

Deep on the ocean floor, sits a tiny, young merchild named Jada. Her bright shining green eyes and beautiful green/purple tail is why her momma named her that. Jada means precious green.  Her golden ringlets will one day relax and give her that flowing hair that most mermaids are known for. Today,  Jada is happily bouncing in her shell. Not many know that the shells the merbabies are born in will remain with them for life. With each stage of their lives it will become exactly what they need at the time. First their crib...then a bouncing chair....then a place to hide precious treasures they discover. Finally, it will become their own young ones crib. Jada is discovering that she has a unique talent....she can control the fishies. Well..at least this one little fish that has been swimming around since her birth. Her momma told her that this was her very own companion and that she would stay with her throughout her lifetime. Jada hadn't picked out a name for her little companion until today. She whispered that she would love to have some pearls of her own...like her momma had. Swish....off little fishie swam to return with a string of beautiful pearls in her mouth...just for Jada. Jada was caught a bit off guard that fishie did as she asked and then she started to giggle. Little fishy just gave herself a name....Pearl!!!

Aren't Jada and Pearl just as cute as can be. Love the chubby little cheeks of young ones. Just makes you want to pinch them..hehe!!  If you read my previous post then you know that Jada has a very strong wire armature wrapped in tape and sealed in glue. She is one of my fully sculpted ooaks. From base to tip of her ringlets she sits at 4 1/4 inches. I did individual scales for her tail and then applies fine MICA powders before baking. I just love the sheen it gives them....like fish scales!! Pearl also has a strong wire armature underneath her fully sculpted clay body. She also has a coating of fine MICA powders as well. The string of pearls are vintage...they were taken from an old wedding veil. I love re purposing items. Her shell is a natural sea shell that has been attached to a spiral wire base. Jada is permanently attached to her shell. She is a collector's item and not a toy so handle her with care. You never know what she might tell Pearl to do if you don't. ^_^

Thank you for coming to visit the old Southern ooaks tree today. I hope you will come back again soon. Until next time........HUGS,

Regi

Sculpting again..YEAH!!!!

It seems like it has been FOREVER (said like in the movie "The Sandlot" when the kids were talking about the big dog..hehe) since I have touched the clay. I decided this morning that today I was giving the squishy stuff some of my time. My muse has really been whispering about mermaids of late....so that's what I decided I would work on. This isn't a mermaid with flowing locks but a merchild....old enough to be discovering her world. Her hair is still in tiny little ringlets and she loves chattering with the fishies. Here are some WIP photos and keep in mind that I just started her this morning.

I know some of you must be saying "OMGOSH....this woman is slow"...LOL!!! I do take a good bit of time on my armatures. I start with twisted wire and then put it in the shape that I want. Then I wrap the wire with white florist tape. As I'm wrapping I am also building out areas...like the shoulders, hiney and such. I have discovered that I don't have to use as much clay when I actually shape the armature a bit more. Once it is all taped, I apply a thin layer of white glue. Ya know....plain old school glue!! Works wonders!! This gives the armature added strength plus it gives a better surface for the clay to adhere to.

Now I'm going to start applying clay to the armature and bring my little merchild to life.  Until next time..........

Regi

Little Feather (Fae) and Alba (Barn Owl)

Nature holds so many wondrous creatures in her many places she calls home. The woodlands are a place that some believe can be enchanted and I whole heartily have to agree. Native Americans know it to be true as they call to their animal spirits. Our woodlands are filled with magnificent Southern oaks, old barns long abandoned and if you listen closely you can hear the soft beating of wings. The wings of Alba, the old barn owl coming in from his daily hunting. Now most barn owls don't live but a few years but Alba will soon be 100.  He is of course enchanted and will live a much longer life still, as long as he never lets anything happen to his little fae that lives not far from his old old barn deep in the old oak trees. One day a very large owl decided this little fae would make a tasty treat and Alba swooped down and saved her. This act of courage to save this tiny fae...Little Feather....made her give her heart away. Her heart belongs to Alba and with it a long life span...so they can be together in the beauty of the woodlands.

Alba is a handsome fellow....don't you think? He sits right at 3 inches. He is one of my full clay sculpts made without the use of any molds. He has black bone bead eyes and is hand painted using acrylic paints. Little Feather is a tiny 2 inches and is also a full clay sculpt designed without the use of any molds and hand painted using acrylic paints.  She looks a bit taller with her hair of feathers. Her wings are made from feathers as well. She has a pretty half brass medallion breastplate adorned with tiny glass beads and bone beads. Her crown is made from the other half of the medallion. Alba and Little Feather are permanently attached to a polished and preserved piece of wood. This piece was a commission piece by a very sweet friend of mine for her new coming great granddaughter. I know that she will be very excited little Khloe to hear that you have made your appearance into the world.

Until next time..........Hugs,
Regi

Monday Muse singing!!!

I just love Mondays!! Don't you? OK stop the laughing...I know most folks don't like Mondays because it means that their weekend is over. I do LOVE my weekends too.....always finding adventures for the Chazman and us to enjoy BUT I love Mondays because the house is quiet and my muse can sing til her heart is content.

This morning she was singing about shells and mermaids and then all of a sudden she was singing about a tea party with faeries. My muse has problems focusing at times (apparently..she is a good bit like me..hehe) but at least she is full of ideas today...LOL!!!

With her songs brought some digging in my treasure trove of goodies. I really liked her song about shells and mermaids and of course the one about the faerie tea party. I'm thinking of doing something cute with the shells....perhaps a merfolk peeking out or a baby mermaid resting peacefully. The fish plate I do believe will have one of my mermaid paintings. The tea cup...well.....I feel a faerie coming to visit that just loves to sit inside the cup and have a conversation or two.

I think that my week will be a full one of designing and working. The above will surely keep me busy but I'm also working on some of my fabric critters as well as some fabric flowers. Busy busy busy...I LIKE IT!!!!!!

Until next time.....HUGS, Regi (ohhh yes....and my muse)

I completed one of the fish plates. Do you think it's to busy? Should the mermaid be smaller? Not sure I like this one. I need input people...INPUT!!!!!

I SEE PENGUINS!!!!

25 Penguins to sew all the day
25 Penguins to sew
Finish one up
Toss it aside
24 Penguins to sew all the day

That's going to be my song for the day..ALL..THE..DAY..LONG!!! LOL  I so don't mind though because these Li'l guys are going to the Chazman's Christmas party at school on Friday. They are so simple to make and only take a few supplies.

Supply List (if you want to make some yourself)

Felt (Black-orange-white-off white-Burgandy)
Black and White Thread
Black seed beads (for eyes)
Faux snow or glitter
Pin backing/Bobby pin/Hair clip/Embroidery thread

Pattern (feel free to borrow mine)
Body Cut 2
Face Cut 1
Beak Cut 2
Flipper Cut 2
Feet Cut 4
Medium YoYo
(for hat)
Small YoYo
(for snowball)
Scarf Cut 1

I think you can look at my already made penguin and see how to make it. I would do a tut but I just don't have the time....YIKES...these have to be done by Friday morning...on top of the other projects I have going on. Someone, remind me to start making all these wonderful gifts right after New Year's day..ppplease!!!

I can give you some tips though. I hand sew all of the penguin....they are small and it would just take to much time on the machine. Well...for me anyways ^_^  I use a blanket stitch on all the sewing. I'm sure most know what type of stitch this is but just in case.......

Of course on the YoYo hat and snowball you will just do a straight stitch and then gather it up and tie the ends together to form each one. I put a tiny bit of batting in both. Put a tiny bit of batting in the body too.

The face I just sew on when I sew the sead beads on for the eyes. On the beak you will cut two and sew just the tops together. I put two small straight stitches where the nostril holes would be. Why cut two of the beak you ask? It makes it look like the penguin has a real beak...hehe!! I also sew these on before I sew the body and stuff it. Just makes it easier.

I cut two of the feet (that would be four actually....two pieces for each foot so that penguin has 2 feet. Got it?) I don't stuff these but having the two pieces blanket stitched together just looks better. Gives it more strength so they will last. I sew these on after the body is stuffed and sewed.

Once you have penguin put together then you simply sew a flipper on each side....put a snowball in one flipper...his hat on his head and his scarf around his neck. I made the scarf for the above penguin out of a strip of felt but with the ones I'm currently working on I'm going to use an old sweater. Use your imagination..there are so many possibilities. I add faux snow flakes to the flippers and the snowball. Glitter works good too. Embellish yours how ever you want. I KNOW they will turn out awesome!!

You can turn these Li'l guys into pins to wear.....attach a bobby pin or hair clip....slide it on a headband or ribbon or just attach a hanger from the hat. Again...use your imagination and have FUN!!! Now let's start singing......................

Until next time.....Hugs, Regi

Boo Hoo!!

Boo Hoo...Boo Hoo, what a sad sad day
It seems this artist has run outa of clay

My muse is whispering for me not to fret
She has an idea that is a sure sure bet

Some paper, a pencil and hearing my muse
it seems I have drawn a critter to use

I love to sculpt with my clay, as anyone that knows me, knows that to be true but it's not the only thing that I can do. OMGOSH...I'm still rhyming....sorry!! ^_^  Let me shake it off. (standing up....shaking my head all around) OUCH...ok enough of that. Now I'm dizzier than normal. HEY...no comment on that subject. I heard that!!  It is true that I have used all of my clay and since the Hubbikins seems to be actually cleaning his pockets out before he puts his pants in the washer. Dang it So nice of him. My pickle jar is a tad bit low. (pickle jar...where I hide put any and all loose change I find...which use to be in the Hubbikins pants pockets that he forgot about)

Being an artist is what I am...and it's also how I keep myself grounded....as in...it makes for a great "THERAPY" session. Keeps me sane...most of the time. In thinking about some of my past sessions work, I remembered some of the fabric critters I use to enjoy designing, sewing and painting. In moving it seems I have lost my pattern folder so I just sat down and started doodling some new ones. I use the term "doodling" as I don't really think of myself as the kind of artist that can draw...just stating a fact!! Anyways, here are some of my doodlings so far.................

This one will be a monkey. I keep my designs simple....very very simple. Can ya tell? HeHe  I'm thinking that I might even make a banana to go with him...attach it to a string to one of his arms. I mean..a monkey has to eat or he could go APE!!

This of course is a FROG. I love frogs and being the mom of a true ALL AMERICAN boy..it's a very good thing that I do!! Can't ya just hear him saying "Ribbet"? Thinking of frogs...I use to make small clay ones and give them as inspirational gifts to friends that were feeling blue. Now....I know what you are probably thinking. "Perhaps Regi has gone insane...what do frogs have to do with inspiration?" Well, let me tell you. On the bottom of each frog I would write the word FROG and I would attach a tag that explained why I was giving them a frog. Here is what the tag would say.....

Fully Rely on God

This smiling fella is a cat. I bet the body pattern looks funny to ya, huh? Well...it does on paper but once sewed up...it looks kinda cute. Kinda like this......

I have to get him or her all painted up and then I will show just what my fabric critters really look like. I really like this body design and I thought of another creature that would look cute with it. Can ya guess what it might be?

Why...it's PUFF the magic dragon of course. I think he will look so cute with this body...like he is laying around just waiting for some mischief magic to get into.

These make such cute gifts to give. You can paint them and leave them just painted. Perfect for a little boy to have a playmate for all those monster battles. You can paint them and then make cute clothes for them. Perfect for those little girls and their afternoon tea parties. Also, one of the things that I have done with them in the past is to let them become Tooth Faery helpers. Paint them and then make 2 small bags to go with them. Each bag is painted alike with a tooth. You place one of the bags around the critters neck with the lost tooth in it. They hold the tooth in the bag to keep it safe until the Tooth Faery comes to collect it. Then the Tooth Faery (that's you by the way) replaces the bag with the tooth in it with the extra bag with money inside. Just a hint too....a quarter won't cut it these days....believe me...I know...the Chazman expected at least a dollar..LOL!!!

I'm so happy that my muse sings so many different ideas to me......I would so hate to go completely insane and mistakenly squish her due to post traumatic artist syndrome. How do YOU keep sane?

Until next time.......HUGS, Regi

Still Here!!!!

I do apologize for my absence as of late. It seems that "LIFE" is just getting in the way a bit as well as my muse has decided to go on a hiatus of some sort. Those that know me, know that I normally work on one thing at a time but here of late I have my fingers in several different ones at once. That could end up being very dangerous or at least some what interesting...ri iight? I guess as artist we all go through these times.....times where we doubt ourselves...times where it seems we have no support...times where our muse has just simply up and gone "POOF". I need my muse whispering in my ear...really I do.
I can prove that I have been working on a few things, as you can see from my messy work station. No comments about the mess either. I know some that keep theirs even messier....not pointing any fingers..hehe
I am working on several tiny mermaid sculpts plus some new gypsy jewelry designs.
I have finally gotten a nice collection of leather and fabric belts so that I can start working on some of my wrist cuff designs. A few of the fabric ones will have bead work on them....some of the leather will have some of my clay beads and or medallions on them as well as both probably having some micro macrame'.

Of course it's getting close to Christmas time too so that means several new Santa ooaks in the works. I'm really excited because I'm finally going to do two that I have been waiting to do. I needed the perfect props to go with them and I finally found them this past weekend. Not going to say what they will be but here are the props.....
Well perhaps my muse did leave me enough inspiration after all...that is before she took off to where ever it is that she goes from time to time. I want to thank all my friends that have not forgotten me and continue to come to visit here under the old Southern Oak tree. I love your visits and your comments. I promise to be here to greet you....always!!!

Until next time...........HUGS,
Regi

PS....one of my friends, Laurie over at Kottage Kreations, after reading my post here invited me to join in a Wednesday blog hop called "What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday over at Stamping Ground. I had never heard of it before this but am so happy that I know about it now. Why don't you go and check it out? I have to admit...it's fun seeing what other's are working on and "ahem" seeing that my desk is not the only messy one. Just click on Stamping Ground above and perhaps you will join in the fun too.
